Ralph’s new online course starts November 6!

Understanding and Navigating Your Soul’s Journey from Before Birth to After Death

In this course you will learn to identify the six great stations and phases of your soul’s journey through human life: incarnation and conception; birth and infancy; the springtime of youth; the mid-life turning; old age, elderhood and dying; the hereafter and rebirth.

In six one and a half hour video talks and Q & A discussions, illustrated by diagrams from Ralph’s major work Ecology of Consciousness, you will be exploring new approaches to realms of consciousness that are traditionally considered the deepest spiritual mysteries of our lives.

Comparing and integrating insights from entheogenic experiences, shamanic journeys, breathwork, hypnotherapy, as well as meditative experiences and dreams, we find remarkable convergences of modern findings with esoteric teachings, both Eastern and Western. Through this course, you will gain a deeper understanding of the totality of your life cycle, from before conception and birth to the after-death realms and reincarnation.

Overtones and Undercurrents: Spirituality, Reincarnation, and Ancestor Influence in Entheogenic Psychotherapy

Overtones are the subtle sounds created in stringed instruments by the sympathetic vibrations of the struck or plucked fundamental strings. One can think of the spiritual dimensions of our experience, that we refer to as “spirit” or “soul”, as analogous to these ethereal harmonics. They are the inner tones and subtle harmonics of spirit and soul that can accompany our experience.

Undercurrents are the flow of tides of water or energy invisibly, below the surface, that can induce powerful movements of surface objects in unexpected directions, towards damaging rocks or abysmal depths. Similarly, karmic entanglements of past incarnations can affect our present experience with seemingly unfounded feelings of guilt, indebtedness, resentment or shame.

The 15 true stories related here, show how the psychological problems we confront may derive from factors often not considered in conventional psychotherapy, including residual effects from prior abortions, unconscious imprints from prenatal existence, memories from past lives, ancestral and familial soul connections, and even psychic intrusions and possession states. The case histories and methods described include the use of quiet retreat space, guided regressions to pre-natal and past-life conditions, yogic light-fire practices and selective use of small doses of entheogens. The concluding chapter describes the use of three different kinds of healing serpent imagery from the Chinese Taoist traditions as well as the ancient Greek Asclepius and Hermetic teachings.

New Book Available March 1 – Ecology of Consciousness – The Alchemy of Personal, Collective and Planetary Transformation

ecology-of-consciousness-smNew Book Available on March 1, 2017:
Ecology of Consciousness – The Alchemy of Personal, Collective and Planetary Transformation

In this book, I offer a distillation of fifty years of exploration and discovery of the many realms of consciousness – from the recesses of the human unconscious, through the shared realities of family and culture, to the cosmic visions in expanded states of consciousness.

In my fifty years of learning, guiding and teaching in the contexts of psychotherapy and exploration of non-ordinary states of consciousness, I have been privileged to learn from hundreds of students, clients and fellow explorers. In the work described in this book, we’ve drawn on the methods and principles of the shamanism, alchemy and yoga, as well as the groundbreaking discoveries of depth psychology, modern neuroscience and the sciences of the macrocosmos and microcosmos.

The objective descriptions of realms described by our material sciences can again by integrated with the internal observations from shared visions and dreams. From pre-birth to after death realms we can learn from and participate in the discoveries of the mystics and visionary explorers. We can learn how to use our innate spiritual intelligence and navigate our states of consciousness for healing and guidance.

This book will be used in my new online course starting on February 22:

Entheogenic experience: Finding the pathways of your soul in the world

A six-week live, interactive video course, presented by Evolver Learning Lab,
starting June 29. In each session Ralph will present one of the six pathways and
will describe how to identify the gifts and challenges of each of these pathways;
after the initial presentation, we will have ample time for discussion and
questions. There are written course materials which will help you to explore how
you and the people you know best are functioning on these pathways in the world.

We sense intuitively that as a human soul, we are here on Earth for a purpose.
Spiritual and shamanic traditions have spoken about seeking and finding a vision for
our life in the world. Who am I? Why am I here? Why did my soul choose to be born
into this family, at this time, in this place? These are the basic questions that
we find ourselves confronting – at important choice points in our life, in
entheogenic experiences or on vision quests. What is my destiny? What are the
pathways in which I can express my creative vision and talents? We will consider
the six archetypal pathways that have been identified in all parts of the world and
all historic periods, in order to better understand your life experiences, visions
and challenges.

The pathways are:

  • One – The Explorer, the Scientist, the Seeker, the Pioneer
  • Two – The Healer, the Shaman, the Therapist, the Peacemaker
  • Three – The Artist, the Story Teller, the Poet, the Musician
  • Four – The Teacher, the Historian, the Social Scientist, the Journalist
  • Five – The Warrior, the Guardian, the Reformer, the Activist
  • Six – The Builder, the Organizer, the Producer, the Engineer

The realms of plants and fungi provide us with life-sustaining nourishment, medicines for healing sickness, relief of pain, and delight for our senses with their color and fragrance. Mysteriously, they function as door-openers to the spirit world. They help us cleanse the lenses of perception and to know our place in the great web of life. Nature awareness deepens our experience of being alive, and the need to care of the world in which we live. How has our culture’s discovery of psychedelic experience enhanced our sense of being nature and the responsibility that gift entails? What can we learn from the amazing plant teachers, the vines of visions, the mushrooms of magic? Where do we go from here?

Kathleen Harrison is an ethnobotanist, who is dedicated to studying and teaching the ways that people relate to plants, fungi, and the wisdom they can offer. She is the president and co-founder of Botanical Dimensions, a non-profit organization that has worked for 30 years to collect knowledge of medicinal and shamanic species. She teaches at BD’s Ethnobotany Library in Occidental, which she curates.

Ralph Metzner, founder and president of the Green Earth Foundation,  is a psychotherapist and former professor at California Institute of Integral Studies  with a life-long interest in visionary plants and medicines.  He is the author of Green Psychologyand editor of The Ayahuasca Experience and Sacred Mushroom of Visions

Two great new books of psychedelic art and the work of H.R. Giger

giger stan Giger mapsThe work of the Swiss artist H.R. Giger, who died in 2014, occupies a unique place in 20th century art. His nightmarish, claustrophobic visions express some of the deepest recesses of the human psyche, both individual and collective. They have particularly drawn the attention of the pioneering psychiatrist Stanislav Grof, who has provided uniquely profound elucidations of the monstrous destructiveness of the collective psyche of modernity.

These two magnificent art volumes contain numerous illustrations of Giger’s art, as well as that of other artists, and the commentaries by Stanislav Grof.

One volume, entitled HR Giger and the Zeitgeist of the Twentieth Century is published by the Swiss publisher Nachtschatten Verlag.  It has mostly Giger’s art, but also some of the paintings from Grof’s patients in psychedelic, perinatal and holotropic therapy. It has the bilingual (German and English) texts of essays by Grof and a foreword by art historian Claudia Müller-Ebeling.

The other, even more recent volume is by Stanislav Grof, published by the MAPS organization and titled Modern Consciousness Research and the Understanding of Art, and includes an extended essay again on The Visionary World of H.R. Giger. Besides Giger’s art, the volume also includes magnificent full color illustrations of the visionary and surrealist art of Ernst Fuchs, Mati Klarwein, Roberto Venosa, Martina Hoffmann, Alex Grey, Android Jones and others. And Grof’s text include his comments on art and the unconscious as seen in the writings of Freud, Otto Rank, Carl Jung, Erich Neumann and others, as well as the detailed correlations with the experiences in the perinatal matrices.

In my commentary on this work, on the book’s back cover, I wrote that “we marvel at the startling correlations between the healer’s insights and the artist’s visions. Both have given powerful expression to the apocalyptic violence and destructiveness seething beneath the surface of 20th century mass-mind mentality. In the recognition of these unconscious processes, there is great hope that humanity may find a way back to a saner and healthier balance.”
